EXPLANATION
DRIVING IS DANGEROUS
Driving is dangerous, but to a driver who scans, recognizes and reacts to potential hazards, accidents can be avoided. Hazard Recognition Driving is visually scanning the environment, identifying hazards and reacting appropriately. This may sound easy to parents but for new drivers, it is nearly impossible without training.
All of the following are priorities of the safe driver:
Before Starting the Engine - Never drive impaired. Look in front, under and behind your parked vehicle, scanning for any objects in your travel path. Eliminate distractions prior to driving.
Keep Your Eyes Out Front - See all of the potential hazards in the distance and comment on objects, traffic zones, signals and signs, pavement markings, pedestrians and other vehicles that you see. This is the first step in planning the safest travel path.
Intersections and Traffic Lights - Identify intersections, traffic lights, signs, any pedestrian movement, and the location and activity of any vehicles approached. Look left, right and left again to make sure that every intersection (including driveways and parking lots) is safe. Be prepared to stop at every intersection, even if you have the right-of-way. It doesn’t matter who’s right if someone is killed or injured in an accident.
Space Cushion - Constantly comment on following time and the space in front of the car. This is the only space that you have total control over. Hitting another car in the rear is usually due to distractions. Maintain a 4 second following time and when someone pulls in front of you, back off and re-establish your 4 seconds.
Left and Right Sides of the Roadway - Identify activity near the travel path, such as pedestrians, parked vehicles, trees, bushes or objects near the road that may hide hazards such as children or animals.
Left, Right and Middle Rearview Mirrors - Constantly check the mirrors to see the movement of vehicles behind the car. When changing lanes, use the blinker, check the mirror and turn your head to be sure that any area not seen in the mirror is clear. Avoid all unnecessary backing and if you do back, check your mirrors, carefully watching for pedestrians and other vehicles.
Speed and Distractions - Distractions cause a majority of accidents. Pay attention while driving. Always know your speed and the speed limit. Be prepared to respond to those hazards that require a reduction in speed, such as weather or road conditions.
Remember - Scan, Recognize, React.
